Relay for Life
    June 2-3, 2006

Relay for Life offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relay is an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length. The event brings communities together to learn about and raise money for the fight against cancer.  Relay brings people together from all walks of life with the common goal of eliminating cancer.  No matter who you are, there’s a place for you at Relay.

Fighting cancer is a team effort. The strength of people coming together for a common cause is greater than the strength of one.

Relay For Life is a great way for corporations to demonstrate their commitment to fighting cancer in the community.

SPONSOR

Relay for Life offers community-based sponsorship to give you and your company or organization the opportunity to show your commitment to the fight against cancer. Various levels of exposure and benefits are offered. For more information contact the community Relay event you would like to support.

On the Right Track

Your support and involvement with Relay for Life supports lifesaving American Cancer Society programs and services.

  • Comprehensive cancer information is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through 1-800-ACS-2345 or www.cancer.org.
  • The Society is the largest source of nonprofit, nongovernmental cancer research funding in the United States, investing about $130 million each year. To date the Society has funded 38 Nobel Prize-winning researchers.
  • We fight for lifesaving laws to increase federal research funding, reduce tobacco use, promote early detection of cancers, improve access to care, and support cancer patients.
  • The Society’s services for cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and those who love them include transportation to treatment, peer support group programs, and resources for practical assistance.

Relay for Life is a community gathering, where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer. We need your help before, during, or after Relay.

Team Recruitment

Re-enlist veteran teams, recruit new teams, and do presentations at team meetings.

Registration/Accounting

Help oversee the registration of participants and the tabulating of funds raised per individual/ team. This committee requires several volunteers and is a great opportunity for bank tellers, accountants, cashiers, etc.

Luminarias

Coordinate the luminaria ceremony; sell luminaria bags prior to and during the event, apply the inscriptions on the luminaria bags, and place them around the track and in the grandstands at the Relay.

Setup & Logistics

Oversee the Relay facility and assist with the setup and cleanup of the site before, during, and after the event. Obtain needed items for the Relay such as tables, chairs, special event tents, restroom facilities, waste disposal, lighting, transportation of goods, etc.

Survivors

Recruit cancer survivors and caregivers to participate in the first lap of the Relay. Coordinate the survivor ceremony and reception/activities that may include a handprint wall, survivor eternal life chain, etc. Register the survivor participants and honor them with a special memento (buttons, ribbons, sashes, shirts, etc.).

Food & Beverage

Secure donations of refreshments and beverages for the participants during the event.

Entertainment

Arrange entertainment for the event consisting of music, games, activities, etc.

SURVIVORSHIP ACTIVITIES

An Invitation to Relay

We invite all cancer survivors in our community to attend the opening ceremonies of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. We encourage you to enjoy the day, make new friends, and celebrate! Relay For Life is an overnight team event that increases awareness of cancer in the community and raises much needed funds to fight the disease. At Relay For Life, teams of friends, neighbors, families, and coworkers commit to keeping at least one member walking the track at all times—because cancer never sleeps. Please join other survivors in the inspirational Survivors Lap that officially begins our annual Relay For Life. For many, the experience of gathering together with other survivors is powerful and moving. Your family and friends are invited to join you during this celebration as well.

Ceremony of Hope

When the sun goes down, hundreds of luminaria light the way under the stars, and a moment of silence falls during the Ceremony of Hope. Luminaria are those glowing bags that to the naked eye appear to be nothing more than paper sacks filled with sand and candles. But upon closer examination these sacks are actually like people, each with a name and a story to tell. The Ceremony of Hope is one of the most special and moving events of the entire Relay. Everyone gathers around to remember those lost to cancer, support those fighting cancer, and rejoice with those who have fought the disease and won. Luminaria are available for a contribution to the American Cancer Society.
